Possible New World Record Largemouth Bass

Published on: July 3, 2009

A possible new word record largemouth bass has been caught in Lake Biwa, Japan. The world record contender was caught by Deps pro Manabu Kurita. The fish reportedly measures 73.5cm (28.94 inches) long and weighed in at 10.12kg (22 pounds, 5 ounces). This is one ounce more than the previous world record caught by George Perry in 1932. According to IGFA rules any new record under 25 pounds must weigh more than 2 ounces more than the previous record in order to replace it. That would make Kurita's bass a tie for the world record.

Lake Biwa has gained a reputation for producing 18 and 19 pound bass, and has been suspected of being the next lake to produce a world record contender. It is Japan's largest lake and has been stocked with Florida Strain largemouth bass. There have been unconfirmed reports recently of a commercial fishing boat netting a largemouth bass that weighed approximately 25 pounds.

Photos of the fish can be seen here:

I agree with "The BASS Doctor", and hope they handled her gently, but what a bass

A great story and a wonderful fish, but I have to make a very strong statement to all anglers who have the very BAD habit, of holding large bass by the lower jaw as shown in Picture 1.. Any fish over 3lbs can suffer irreparable harm from a grip like that. A large fish should be supported in the mid section or belly with a hand firmly supporting the weight of the fish. A fish "released" with a fractured or dislocated jaw will DIE within a week of release. Personally, I do not ever want to live with the thought that I killed a fish in such a manner especially, as both Large and Smallmouth bass have given me and others, so much enjoyment over the years. The article you wrote on the new world record bass was accurate and well written. However, when you and others always say more information can be obtained at IGFA.org, that is really a misleading statement, since Manabu Kurita and his best friends and interpreter, are my best friends and site members. I have all his photos and current information and I talk to him personally almost every single day, and have been for longer than any IGFA official or anyone else. I feel it is disrespectful at the very least, to not mention the person who gets this and all other current and accurate information right from the horses mouth so to speak. So, the real information on him and his bass can be obtained from me as I have stated many times before. Steve vonBrandt, Owner, World Record Trophy Bass at http://delawaretrophybass.com
