Hookin' Up in Belize

Rainforests, caves, sandbars and crashing waves - this is what I was surrounded by during my stay in Belize...and I loved it!

We started out our trip deep in the jungle at the Jaguar Paw Jungle Resort, where the saying is "When was the last time you tried something for the first time?" Isn't that great? As the host of an adventure/lifestyle/travel/fishing show, I'm pretty good at making sure I try new things on a regular basis - because I usually don't have much choice! But it really got me thinking that for people who don't have a job that make them try these new and exciting tasks, it's so great that there are places like Jaguar Paw to encourage just that!

While in the jungle, I had the good fortune to try not one, but TWO things for the first time! Our first activity was Cave Tubing and was to be led by Pedro who's been touring the caves for five years. I can honestly say that I have never experienced anything like Cave Tubing before, which made the event all that more fun. We hiked through the jungle and down to the cave opening and once we were 300-600 feet below the ground, we didn't see daylight for almost four hours! I felt like I was one of those bad guys in a movie who lives in the underworld…super dark and mysterious…Next up, was repelling. After eating some lunch, we hiked through the jungle once again, except for this time instead of hiking down, we hiked up towards the top of the trees. Once we reached our take off point, Jose and Emilio outfitted us with all the safety gear one requires when repelling down a 150 foot limestone cliff…eek…then, down the cliff I went. I must say, it was not nearly as scary as I was expecting it to be and the view was phenomenal! If you're up for either of these activities, check out http://jaguarpaw.com/index.shtml

After spending some time in the jungle, we decided we should check out the other side of things and headed to St. George's Caye, an island 20 minutes off the Belize coast. This place could not be more different than the jungle, but was equally breathtaking. The St. George's Caye resort specializes in diving, but also offers sport fishing, delicious cuisine, a private beach and spa services. It's a very quaint and secluded place so it's perfect if you really want to relax - or go diving or fishing. To my surprise, my family was there shooting an episode of Real Fishing so my parents were able to join me for the fishing segment! We spent the first part of the day fishing the flats and my dad caught a trophy bonefish off a weighted fly. We were pretty happy with his catch and so moved on to fishing from a boat where I caught a couple of nice mackerel. All in all, it was a great day of fishing, with the sun out and my parents by my side - can't ask for more than that!
