James Blackmore from conception bay south, Newfoundland writes:

i am about to start my sea trouting season its getting towards the end of Febuary and some of the locals have already cought a few sea run brookies my question is this what would give me the best chances to catch a few of these elusive fish i noticed a few people using a sinker and bait on spinning rods and also some guys are using fly rods hiding there flies of coarse so nobody can see what there using. so whatever style of fishing you recommend please also specify what flies or bait to use thanks a million

Allen replies:

Hi Early inthe season they tend to stick near the bottom. Also the water is likely a bit dirty. So, you need something to get your offering to the bottom and something they can see, e.g., something bright.

Bio

Dr. Allen Curry

Allen grew up in the Muskoka’s of central Ontario where he was weaned on brook trout, smallmouth bass, “sunfish and rock bass”, and northern pike. He graduated from the University Guelph in southern Ontario and has worked as a fisheries technician, biologist, lecturer, and now professor. Allen moved to New Brunswick and the University of New Brunswick in 1995 to start the NB Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research where he remains the Assistant Director for Fisheries – Canada’s only such unit. In 2004, he became the Director of the Canadian Rivers Institute (www.unb.ca/cri).

Allen’s research focuses on issues of importance for recreational fisheries in eastern Canada. He has published many scientific articles on brook trout (but really a char), smallmouth bass, muskellunge, and rainbow smelt, but also fishes in general, their relationship to each other, and their habitat needs. Allen has had the opportunity to fish numerous species in many lakes and rivers across Canada (and even some Caribbean waters). He is a licensed professional guide in NB where he has guided federal ministers and industry CEO's.
