Cold Water Pond Bass

gabriel from dayton writes:

i fish alot at a farm pound owned by my wifes famly it is stocked with large mouthbass, bluegills and chanelcats. with the weather getting colder. im have problems hooking into the bass. i maly use rubber worms or mepps spinners. and advise to help increase my catch rate

Karl replies:

Gabriel- when the water starts to drop, the fish can sometimes go nuts for a spell, then shut down until they get used to the dropping temps as a sign the cooler season is coming- I would alter my approach and try smaller baits and add scent products to my presentations; try drop shotting soft plastic imitations and alter the lead length off bottom to entice strikes by shaking the bait in the face of fish- it works around the world for any specie; smaller 4" worms and micro tubes suspended below a slip float is another option;
also, try fishing during the peak/warmest times during the day when the fish might be most active with a slight water temp rise. good luck
