Jig Tricks for Bass

Tim young from shawnee writes:

I have been trying to catch fish on a jig.I have caught a few on a foot ball jig black and green. With a green zoom trailer. And have caught a few but not like on other baits.what are some sizes and colors and a few techneques that might help me in stained and clear water. And what are some cheap but durable swim baits 4inch or bigger

Karl replies:

Tim- Swimming a jig can provoke arm jolting strikes from largemouth that might not strike a jig laying on bottom. I alter my presentations to get a feel for the day, each day is different, don`t get stuck in a rut and fish the jig one way, every day. I like the new Strike King Hack Attack jig with the 5/0 wide gap hook and of course the only trailer I`ll use is the Strike King Chunk (they stay on the hook and are super soft); add rattles to your jigs in dirty water and go to a pumpkin green or green flake jig in clear conditions with a matching trailer and go slighter heavier to provoke strikes on the fall if your fishing deeper trees or docks. I`ll use the football jig when I want to crawl the jig off bottom for both smallies and largies and when they are on edges and ledges off the shoreline. As for swimbaits, the Strike King Shadalicious is my favorite bait in the 3-1/2" and 4" for smallies and 5-1/2" for largies.
