Luke Scott works on the baseball field but he chooses to play in the woods, rivers and streams across America as an avid angler. The power hitting outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles is also a devoted outdoorsman.
His prowess on the field, popularity with fans and comfort on the water, made the 31- year-old, De Leon Springs, Florida native a natural choice to be part of WFN: World Fishing Network’s contest looking to find the most passionate angler in the Chesapeake Region. The winner of the “WFN Fishing with Luke Scott” contest will win a day on the water with Scott, $1,000 cash and a prize package from WFN.
The left-handed power hitting OF/DH has improved in each of his five seasons in the major leagues. After a “cup of coffee” with the Houston Astros in 2005, Scott made a late season splash with the Astros in 2006, batting .336 with 10 homers, 6 triples and 37 RBI in only 214 at bats. The following season, he carved out a bigger role hitting 18 homers and tallying 64 RBI in 369 at bats for the Astros.
After that season, Scott was one of five Astros packaged to Baltimore in exchange for former MVP Miguel Tejada. With the rebuilding O’s, Scott has been a consistent bat in the middle of the line-up the past two seasons, with 23 HR, 65 RBI and a .257 average in 2008 and 25 HR, 77 RBI, and a .258 average last season. This year, Scott is projected as the starting DH.
Scott attended Oklahoma State University where he earned Big 12 Conference honors. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 9th round of the 2001 draft and traded to the Astros in 2004 for left-handed pitcher Jeriome Robertson. During the off-season he lives on a 22-acre ranch in DeLand, Fla.
