Sushi Scare

I joined a fellow WFN employee for lunch today at a nearby sushi restaurant. Ahi tuna is one of my favorite fish, and I normally wouldn't think twice about ordering a plate full. However, with the recent reports of wide spread mercury and PCB contamination, I found myself thinking twice before ordering. I almost ended up ordering a tempura and california roll platter that hardly had any fish in it! In the end, my stomach won the battle and I order the Tuna Lover's Platter. When it arrived my mind kept flashing back to the list I saw with Ahi Tuna marked as "HIGHEST MERCURY LEVEL - Avoid eating."

Something tasted different with the tuna. It had a slight metallic taste to it. Was it really any different from the tuna I had there a few months ago, or was my mind playing tricks on me? The warnings of high mercury levels, and the perilously low numbers of tuna will almost certainly make me change to salmon next time.

I mainly fish for bass, and therefore don't eat many fish that I catch. If I did, I'm sure that I would be reducing the numbers I kept. How will these warnings affect your eating habits? Are you going to change your species of preference, or will you cut down on your overall intake of fish?

It's a real shame these days that you have to avoid eating some fish because of water contamination that could be prevented.

I often go to Sushi places with my wife and we love it. PCB’s and mercury are materials heavy and non-soluble; that being said any species of fish that “could” be prone to this contamination would be flat fish or other benthic species. Remember, I said “COULD”. It’s all about government control on purchasing power when and where we spend our hard-earned dollars. Look...we’re all going to die someday of something and when that day finally arrives for me I’d like to think I had some control over it. Eat, drink, be merry and let the big stuff take care of itself and worry about what’s real. Fish On, Timothy P.S. I love those California rolls too but the salmon and cod or awesome too! Fish is my favorite four-lettered-word.
