How to Rig a Sushi Fly

Posted on August 26, 2010

The Next Big Bait for Downrigging on the Great Lakes

Step 1 - Take whole Alewife and fillet one side of the fish. You should have about a 3-4 inch strip. (You can also use a herring strip as well)

#

Step 2 - Take the fillet and taper one end to no more than 3/8 of an inch at the head and 1/2 an inch at the tail. Split the tail with a 3/4 inch slit down the center of the strip.

#

Step 3 - Take un-slit end and wrap brass wire around the bait in opposite directions

#

Step 4 - Slide down the fly section over the strip and you're ready to go

#

The Sushi Rigs come with a 50lb 5 foot leader. At times I will trim the leaders down to 18" but typically I'll run them 36" to the full 60".

Flashers that work well with the rig are Spin Doctors 8" model, Bechhold and Sons Fishcatcher Flashers 8"-11" model, and Coyote in the 8" range.

This lure is best when targeting mature Chinook Salmon but it will still take hits from Coho Salmon, and all Trout species.

Best times to use the fly would be in the summer months from June through to late August.
