Father's Day
Posted on June 19, 2009
The greatest memories I have from my childhood are not those of screaming on the world's largest roller coaster or playing in Little League. They are times I spent on the water with my father.
Without a doubt, my biggest fishing influence is my dad. He introduced me to the sport at a veyr young age and showed me specific techniques often taking time away from his own time casting.
Untangling, baiting, unhooking, untangling, baiting....
My father was always after the lake or river's biggest fish. Just like I am today. He would always throw the biggest bait in the tackle box. Just like I do today. He would take me out in any weather, often battling wind and rain. Just like I experience today. And, he taught me the art of patience, which I will forever be grateful. Just like I apply each day...
As a father now, my favorite times with my kids are also times spent by the rivers edge or watching my daughter grab a paddle and look at me with a huge grin.
It seems more children are being entertained by a big electric box and less are coming home with dirty hands, pants and ear -to-ear smiles caused by the one that did not get away.
Thank you Dad, for introducing me to this way of life and teaching me to always reach for the biggest bait in the box. Now I spend my free time untangling, baiting, unhooking and untangling and wouldn't have it any other way...

Great story. When I hear my friends complain about how their teenagers won't give them the time of day, I try to recall one kayak fishing trip that our boys have balked on and can't think of one. It's something we can do together, yet they can feel independent. It seemed like the only appropriate way to spend father's day weekend.Posted by Ashley R. From Napanee, ON on Jun 23, 2009
