The Kayaks Are Coming! The Kayaks Are Coming!
Posted on April 28, 2009
The ice has melted and our local water will soon be filled with eager anglers . One noticeable change nowadays is in exchange for the typical aluminum and fiberglass boat, you will be seeing a lot more boats made of Polyethylene - yes, the kayaks are coming!
The introduction of the sit-on-top kayak has anglers paddling to their favorite fishing holes. Perhaps, it is the economy and the fact many people can no longer afford the 20-footer with a 225 hp on the back. Or, perhaps it is because people can explore real skinny water that is not accessible by larger craft.

Kayaks can get into areas that are not accessible with larger watercraft.
2008 was a banner year in terms of kayak angling in Canada. The great success of Kayak Angler magazine, the numerous kayak angling message boards, and the start of kayak-only fishing tournaments; proves that this new method to fool fish into a quick picture - is here to stay.
Some quality fish were caught in the kayak last year:
- Kevin Whitley fishing out of Chesapeake Bay landed several striped bass over 35-lbs including a 52-lbs monster.
- Howard McKim of Alaska hooked and fought a 250-lbs marlin for four and half hours - until the line broke while fishing with Jim Sammons in Baha, Mexico.
There is no fish you can't catch in a kayak: musky, salmon, sturgeon, tarpon, sharks....Just use extra caution, and make sure you bring all required safety equipment, travel as a team and plan your trips. Also be sure to check your local weather forecasts.
Head down to a local outfitter and give this way of fishing a try, it's a perfect way to stay fit, do your part for the environment and catch some quality fish too.
I hope to see some of the same faces and many new ones on the water this year trying out this exciting sport!
