Fishing Kyuquot - A Real Paradise

Posted on January 11, 2010

#I've had the good fortune to fish just about all of those famous west coast fishing holes that are scattered up and down the British Columbia shoreline from Vancouver north to the Alaskan border. Believe it when they say that this province truly does offer phenomenal trolling and jigging for big, brawny, spectacular, silver-sided coho and chinook salmon. If you plan in advance, it's almost a given that you can experience some of the finest salmon fishing found anywhere on the planet. But, I'm going to do you one better than that. Save all the hassle and just make tracks to Fishing Kyuquot, a destination located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Here you'll find spectacular rugged coastal mountain scenery, pristine fast flowing rivers and open water salmon trolling that is unmatched anywhere else in the province of British Columbia.

I've been visiting Kyuquot annually for the last decade. I've also known Matt Guiguet for almost two decades. Kyuquot has provided me with non-stop big fishing action on each and every trip and Guiguet is one of the finest guides I've had the pleasure of sharing a boat with over all those years as well. Matt and his partner Kristy Bostrom operate Fishing Kyuquot, a one of a kind sport fishing destination that is guaranteed to satisfy requirements of any open water angling enthusiast.

The water only a few minutes out from the lodge is referred to as the Salmon Highway. It is a rich feeding zone for overgrown chinook and coho salmon as they migrate up and down along the western shoreline of the big island. Limit catches are almost always the norm and never the exception. Chinook can weigh up to 50 pounds or more, with 20 - 35 pounds being expected daily. The coho are so thick at times that it's almost impossible to get down to the deeper feeding springs. Kyuquot Sportfishing is also renowned for their regular hook-ups of barn door hundred pound plus halibut.

For an easterner, getting to Kyuquot is almost as much fun as the fishing. I fly into Vancouver, visit the car rental and then hop the first B.C, ferry heading for Nanaimo. From there take advantage of the opportunity to spend a night in fabled Campbell River, British Columbia. Rise and shine early the next morning and enjoy the scenery as you drive three hours up the coast and over the coastal mountain range through some of the most spectacular scenery found anywhere on the continent.

At your pick-up point, Matt and his staff will greet you for the short boat trip to the fabled Miss Charley's Lodge, your cozy and comfortable lodge. Upon your arrival you will note that Fishing Kyuquot is no big time, formal operation. Matt and Kristy operate a small, informal fishing destination and besides the incredible fishing, it's the atmosphere that adds to the importance of Fishing Kyuquot. Here, besides being pampered to the limit, you are experiencing fishing the way fishing should be.

I've had the opportunity to live in British Columbia, I've had the opportunity to fish just about all those famous west coast fishing holes, fishing camps and fishing lodges, but day in day out, I almost always make tracks to Sport Fishing Kyuquot for the fishing adventure of a lifetime.

Darryl you're the best, I've enjoyed your magazine and show for more years than I like to think. What attracted me to you most was your affordability when fishing most areas, promoting Ontario fisheries and most of all the fact your son was with you so often (I particularly enjoyed the ice fishing show with Jess). Kids need to be introduced and supported in our fantastic outdoors. Cheers

"Oh and by the way, you'll also never see me dressed up like a Nascar Driver in one of those fancy poster boy fishing outfits? if you're comfortable in jeans, sneakers and an old t-shirt I am too!" - Awesome! Keep up the good work pal.

Hey, what can I say about myself that hasn't already been said by many?

Well, for starters, I'm not a racist. How that heck could I be? I've got more strains of different nationalities under my skin than the United Nations. Let's see there's a little Scot, a touch of English, a dab of Ukranian, and a pinch of Russian. Then again, I'm married to a Polish gal. Hell, I've even got a native Indian woman for an aunt. So when you hear me going on one of my rants around the campfire or out sitting in a boat on Going Fishing Tv don't ever think I'm a racist. Maybe a little bit ?redneck' mind you, but never a racist. What I am though, is a dye in the wool ?realist' and I'm also someone who is never politically correct. I stand up for my beliefs and if you don't agree with me, don't turn me off. Sit back and listen to my side of the story and you'll soon be converted.

I've been in the fishing game up here in Canada for more than 40 years. I owned, published and edited a magazine called the Ontario Fisherman for almost 15 years. The publication was a success because I always told it like it was and published opinions that most anglers wanted to hear. We made a point of always sticking up for the Canadian sport fishery and went after those that were detrimental to it. That's even the case today with my Going Fishing TV production. Yes, we do things like all the rest of those other fishing shows. We tell you where to find the fish, how to catch the fish and we're very popular with our segments on how to cook those fish. But still, we stick up for fisherman, fish and the sport fishery.

Now think of this. How many times will you see any other of those hosts going up against, the government , a special interest group, a strong commercial fishing industry or any other powerful faction that is detrimental to our sport? I'm going to tell you right now, hardly ever! Tune into Going Fishing and you'll learn that I tell it like it is.

No, I'm not a racist, a trouble maker ( I have a better word for that by the way) or some raving fanatic. One more time, I'm never politically correct. I'm a realist and I'm darn worried about the future of sport fishing in Canada, in the United States and just about anywhere else that fish swim and we can wet a line. I'm worried about my fishing future, my kids' fishing future and your fishing future. Oh and by the way, you'll also never see me dressed up like a Nascar Driver in one of those fancy poster boy fishing outfits? if you're comfortable in jeans, sneakers and an old t-shirt I am too!

They tell me these things I'm going to be putting together periodically are call blogs. I'm just going to refer to them as interesting reading. Stay with me over the next few months. I'm going to tell you where to find them, how to catch them, maybe how to cook them and a whole lot more. That's about it and that's about me. Darryl Choronzey .(aka Cronzy) Going Fishing TV...
