Sund's Lodge..Something Different, Something Special Paradise

Posted on April 19, 2010

#I'd heard a lot about a place called Sund's Lodge, long before I visited it last summer.

In describing Sund's you can use the words unique, extraordinary, spectacular or my favourite… paradise. Bluntly put, it's all of these and more. First off, Sund's is surrounded with a rugged, pristine wilderness setting that can only be found in coastal British Columbia. The lodge itself is one of a kind and like nothing I've experienced before. Mid-sized and accommodating a maximum of 24 anglers, the cedar and douglas fir constructed chalets are some of the finest found anywhere on the coast. Then there's the hot tubs, the kayaks, the hammocks, the satellite tv's, the 10-star dining, the cordial and accommodating staff and oh yes, never forget the lamas. Trust me, there is just no place like it in British Columbia or for that matter Canada. Sund's definitely stands alone as a must visit fishing destination.

But let's talk fishing. As already noted, Sund's Lodge is strategically situated at the top of the famous Inside Passage. This region of the coastal Pacific is the summer feeding grounds for spring salmon, coho, sockeye, pinks and chum. The salmon that converge out from Sund's Lodge may have been born in a river located anywhere from California, all the way north to Alaska. Here the fish are always hungry, always on the bite and always accommodating. The coho will average 15 pounds or better and can top that magic 20 pound mark. Chinook salmon or springs as they are known, regularly enter that magical 30 pound plus 'tyee' category and occasionally top 50 pounds or more. If you are a bottom fisherman the water surround Sund's Lodge also are home to healthy schools of bass, ling cod and snapper. Oh, and by the way, the waters here are renown for their halibut populations. Chicken halibut are just about everywhere you drop a deep line and barn doors weighing as much as 100 pounds or more are always on the prowl. Going homell may take just a little longer than getting there. Don't forget you will be hauling back limits of vacum packed and frozen fillets to remember the adventure.

Half of the fun of fishing at Sund's Lodge for me, is getting to Sund's Lodge. I'm one of those guys that like to enjoy the ride when I go anywhere to wet a line. Flying over the treetops and glacial covered mountain peaks is fine for most, but after a while I find that a little ho hum. When I get to British Columbia I'm enthralled to just jump in a car and drive. I love nothing better than soaking up the atmosphere, the scenery and even the people that reside in northern B.C. The trip to Sund's Lodge is always special for me. It starts with the trip across the inside straits leaving Vancouver and heading for Victoria or Nanamio on Vancouver Island. Once I land I make a direct trail to Campbell River. Here I visit a few of the finest salmon hatcheries in the world, tackle shops and then almost always stop in at world famous Painter's Lodge for a quiet evening on the water. The next morning I'm up and driving early along the northshore highway that stretches from Campbell River to Port Hardy. Trust me, the scenery along this route is spectacular and awesome.

Sund's Lodge definitely is special. It's a different type of fishing destination, the likes of which can't be found anywhere else in British Columbia or Canada for that matter. It's the ideal destination to take the bride, the family or for that matter stage a corporate get together. It's also a great place to just get away from it all.

Hey, what can I say about myself that hasn't already been said by many?

Well, for starters, I'm not a racist. How that heck could I be? I've got more strains of different nationalities under my skin than the United Nations. Let's see there's a little Scot, a touch of English, a dab of Ukranian, and a pinch of Russian. Then again, I'm married to a Polish gal. Hell, I've even got a native Indian woman for an aunt. So when you hear me going on one of my rants around the campfire or out sitting in a boat on Going Fishing Tv don't ever think I'm a racist. Maybe a little bit ?redneck' mind you, but never a racist. What I am though, is a dye in the wool ?realist' and I'm also someone who is never politically correct. I stand up for my beliefs and if you don't agree with me, don't turn me off. Sit back and listen to my side of the story and you'll soon be converted.

I've been in the fishing game up here in Canada for more than 40 years. I owned, published and edited a magazine called the Ontario Fisherman for almost 15 years. The publication was a success because I always told it like it was and published opinions that most anglers wanted to hear. We made a point of always sticking up for the Canadian sport fishery and went after those that were detrimental to it. That's even the case today with my Going Fishing TV production. Yes, we do things like all the rest of those other fishing shows. We tell you where to find the fish, how to catch the fish and we're very popular with our segments on how to cook those fish. But still, we stick up for fisherman, fish and the sport fishery.

Now think of this. How many times will you see any other of those hosts going up against, the government , a special interest group, a strong commercial fishing industry or any other powerful faction that is detrimental to our sport? I'm going to tell you right now, hardly ever! Tune into Going Fishing and you'll learn that I tell it like it is.

No, I'm not a racist, a trouble maker ( I have a better word for that by the way) or some raving fanatic. One more time, I'm never politically correct. I'm a realist and I'm darn worried about the future of sport fishing in Canada, in the United States and just about anywhere else that fish swim and we can wet a line. I'm worried about my fishing future, my kids' fishing future and your fishing future. Oh and by the way, you'll also never see me dressed up like a Nascar Driver in one of those fancy poster boy fishing outfits? if you're comfortable in jeans, sneakers and an old t-shirt I am too!

They tell me these things I'm going to be putting together periodically are call blogs. I'm just going to refer to them as interesting reading. Stay with me over the next few months. I'm going to tell you where to find them, how to catch them, maybe how to cook them and a whole lot more. That's about it and that's about me. Darryl Choronzey .(aka Cronzy) Going Fishing TV...
